Mons Klint & Stevns Klint – What is the difference between these two Geological hot spot?
A frequently asked question from our customers is what is the difference and which place is best to visit: Mons Klint or Stevns Klint?
If you love nature, geology, history, or simply stunning landscapes, Denmark’s Mons Klint and Stevns Klint are two of the most fascinating places to visit. Both cliffs tell ancient stories written in stone, yet each offers a unique experience.
Stevns Klint is about 1 hour & 20 mins drive from Copenhagen city and got listed on UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014, famous for its striking white chalk cliffs and a thin, dark layer known as the Fiskeler (fish clay). This layer marks the K/Pg boundary between the Cretaceous and Paleogene periods, evidence of the asteroid impact that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs 66 million years ago. Stevns Klint offers the best views of the boundary.
The terrain along the cliff is flat and easy, suitable to all fitness level. Along the trail you will pass by several interesting attractions. Stevns Fyr (light house) standing on the highest point of the trail, 41 metres above sea level, you get a fantastic view on the top. Hojerup Old Church dated back to year 1200 situated on the very edge of the cliff. Boesdal Kalkbrud where limestones had been excavated. Stevns Klint Experience, a little exhibition and explains very well the amazing story and geology importance of Stevns Klint and the K/Pg boundary. Stevnsfort, a Cold War museum. End of the trail we reach the charming harbour of Rodvig where you can enjoy a well-deserved ice cream or freshly brewed coffee.
Mons Klint is about 2 hours drive from Copenhagen and got listed on UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2025. The highest point of Mons Klint is 128 metres above sea level, giving this scenic and breathtaking cliff views.
GeoCenter Mons Klint offers a larger exhibition (than Stevns Experience), impressive collections of ambers and fossils and different activities for children. Most visitors would walk down the steep wooden stairs, Denmark longest stairs leading you to the beach where you see the chalk layers and the mighty cliff from the bottom. The beach is one of the best spots in Denmark to find sea urchins, sharks’ teeth, and other fossils.
The Shepherd offers visitors who wish to explore more of Mons Klint, away from main tourist area and go on a hike about 6 km north alongside the cliff and wild forest, home to many rare plants, animals and fungi. The terrain is varied and suited for frequent hikers and modest to good fitness level.
