The Big Viking Tour: Ships, Kings & Living History

Embark on a grand adventure through Denmark’s Viking Age and royal past. This immersive day tour takes you from the legendary Viking ships of Roskilde to the royal tombs of Roskilde Cathedral, and finally to the enchanting, hands-on world of Sagnlandet Lejre.

Begin at the footsteps of kings at Denmark’s first Gothic cathedral, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1995. Discover royal secrets as you explore the tombs of 40 Danish monarchs, including the mighty Harald Blåtand and Queen Margrethe I. Travel through the history of the church, from the Viking kings to modern time.

Next, the Roskilde Viking Ship Museum, home to the world’s best-preserved Viking ships. See five original 11th-century longships, each with its own story of raids, trade, and adventure. Get up close to the ships and explore interactive exhibits. Try your hand at Viking crafts and learn how these fearsome warriors built their legendary vessels.

Visit the boatyard where modern craftsmen use ancient techniques to build and restore ships. Try do-it-yourself boatbuilding with wood scraps, paper, string, and any other imaginative materials you can dream up. In the workshop, you’ll find tips, tricks, ideas, and inspiration to help you build a boat that can sail.

Finally, travel through time in Sagnlandet Lejre, an open-air museum where history is not just seen but experienced. Walk in The Wild path, a 330-meter-long walkway, and enjoy the beautiful nature. Meet Vikings, Iron Age farmers, and Stone Age hunters—all brought to life by passionate, costumed guides. Experience Denmark’s largest Viking hall.
